Velour carpet tiles or 'curly hair' velour are a general use type of tile. Manufactured using a process commonly known as needle punch. The pile is punched through a backing layer using barbed needles making a versatile top cloth. We often explain this velour finish to someone unfamiliar with the different types of construction as 'the green scouring section on top of a washing up sponge'.
The cloth which at this point is just over 2 metres wide is then backed in bitumen and finally cut into individual squares at the last stage of production. Often made from polypropylene yarn and generally at the budget end of the carpet tile scale, this type of pile is great for use in factories, motor factors, site storage units and garages. The properties of this fibre help to make it resistant to stains and is very hard wearing considering their cheaper price tag compared to other types of floor coverings.
